My gift to you, NEW FREE SONG!

My holidays gift to you is a brand new song, absolutely FREE or whatever you want to give for it. This song is in the same vein as "I would destroy" in that it's a piano track but this one is a little more experimental and sparse....just a piano, vocal, harp and strings....
Something tranquil to end a turbulent year for myself.

Special thanks to Mark Bigelow, who is now part of Cherry Atom Pie Publishing (My company) for helping me out and Stephen Marsh for an awesome mastering job!

A rough night but a start nonetheless

It was an incredibly difficult night last night, from the pouring rain to lack of a sound check or even proper line check, to drama with another band in the line up, to either an incredibly inept sound engineer or one that perhaps was a friend of band that had an issue with our start time, conspiracy theories aside, it was a rough start but a start nonetheless to SHAOLIN TEMPLE OF BOOM getting on stage.

We dealt with the situation we are given even if that meant dealing with perhaps the worst sound I have ever had to work but we dealt with it now it's time to move on, we will be playing more frequently and may have another show within the next few weeks in California, perhaps several new shows.

Here is a pic from last night's debauchery

www.facebook.com/photo.php

Here is a video clip http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1275399718482&ref=mf

Here is another clip of Into Nothing live...http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1275400958513&ref=mf

I contacted Brett Lieberman who does the booking at VU bar and we will more than likely play a show there within the next few weeks,  Brett told me people there wanted us back.... from there we will build and build and play and play and come out with 2 guns blazing until some sort of outcome occurs.

As difficult as the show was last night with all the drama and so forth there were moments that were cool but as always this was a learning experience.

Here is Borja

I wish his guitar was louder last night, the sound engineer buried it so low for most of the night you could hardly hear it, but towards the end of the night I guess he corrected himself or Borja raised his volume cause it sounded half way audible in Into Nothing and Evil, which were the 2 clips I uploaded to facebook http://www.facebook.com/shaolintempleofboom

So in random news I looked on SToB's last FM page and saw that the similar artists to SToB has changed (Thank God) http://www.last.fm/music/Shaolin+Temple+of+BooM and now Celldweller comes up as a similar artist, I guess mostly because of SToB's association with FiXT store way back when....when FiXT and SToB were promoting for SToB to win the Wonka Battle of the bands....that's a welcome change cause the bands they had before "Kaos Krew" and so forth have absolutely nothing to do with SToB, Celldweller is at least someone I like haha...I got respect for him and all he's accomplished. ;)

After how badly last night's show went I just want to get out and do another one as soon as possible, I know things will go much better at VU and also at places where things are a little more....shall we say...."professional"

Alright enough of that....

We are going to try and video tape our next rehearsal...perhaps the whole thing...so maybe within the next email there will be links to more video footage of us playing...

If you didn't know I am down to my last few of XL sizes for the "I would destroy" shirt which is going out of print once it sells out, but what's really cool is that once you buy the shirt you can download 5 new FREE tracks that are even higher quality then what you can get on iTunes....and it's only $10 BUCKS! Check it here! http://shaolintempleofboom.bandcamp.com/

Join me for a drink?

Shaolin Temple of BooM has been an epic struggle for me after years of searching for the right players and failing time and time and time again I have found what I think to be a great chemistry of guys both in playing abilities, style and personalities.  Those of you that have been with me a long time will remember the cast of characters I had to go through in order to get here but I am happy here so Shaolin Temple of BooM will finally get on stage for the first time in the right way and this time stay on stage, I think SToB has played out live 2 times in the last 3 years, this hurts me very deeply because I love playing out, but it's hard as hell to put a band together, let me tell you.

For example, before Lior joined the band the drums never sounded right for any of the songs, but "Into Nothing" in particular never sounded right with any drummer SToB has been with previously, it takes a certain touch and feel to play that song right live, our last drummer never got it right and thus the song never sounded right.  Drums are so essential to live shows, if they aren't right, the band can fall like a house of cards, that is why I am very happy Lior has joined SToB.  I recorded "Into Nothing" with a drummer for hire way back when and only till now is that song being played in the right way again.  June's such a quintessential bassist, melodic yet riff oriented he is by far the best bassist I have ever played with.  Then of course there is Borja, I'm really picky when it comes to guitar since on stage I won't be playing guitar on some songs but in the recordings I am playing guitar on all of them with Borja.  Borja not only is a great musician he is what I consider to be my friend.  I can't tell you how patient he has been throughout the 2 years he has been with me now.

But the wait is over, Shaolin Temple of BooM is finally taking this thing live.  We will be playing out more heavily now that the chemistry is right, and my wait of 5 long years to get on stage in the right way is now over.  We will start with an intimate show at Labries in Glendale California Thurs Dec 10th, 2009 at 10pm

Here is the info of the club:

Labrie's

806 E. Colorado Blvd

GlendaleCA 91205

(818) 243-1522

I do hope if you will be anywhere in the area of Glendale/Los Angeles and beyond that you join us!  This has been a tumultuous year to say the least and yes Shaolin Temple of BooM has been suppressed by certain factions in this world but they can not hold Shaolin Temple of BooM down.  That is why as I type this email, I feel a certain sense of.... I don't even know how to explain it.....I feel like I want to unload everything I have inside me tomorrow night at Labrie's and I do hope you join us.

Here is a pic of us rehearsing last night

In other news, I unveiled a brand new Shaolin Temple of BooM song called "Always, Everything" which is a simple piano track with vocals, harp and orchestra.... you can grab a glimpse of it in this video I recorded a couple of days ago here www.facebook.com/video/video.php or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZHJA3B2UgE

I like to say that this song was inspired a bit by Beethoven (as corny or as pretentious as it sounds Beethoven is a huge source of inspiration to me) and Tim Burton movies....love me some Tim Burton movies...

The year is quickly coming to a close, and I feel that just around the corner there is a lot of great news for Shaolin Temple of BooM, January may hold many surprises for SToB yet.

My imprint label Cherry Atom Pie Publishing now has 2 people on board that believe in it strongly.  Mark Bigelow and Mark Kappes, Mark will be working on the promotions side of things....Mark Bigelow that is....and Mark Kappes is helping me out with design work of websites and other things to do with online presentation.

Here is a pic of me I bet you never seen before, it was taken almost 6 years ago today, when I first came to Los Angeles

That's it for now, I do hope you join us this Thurs night, December 10th at 10pm at Labrie's

Till the next time,

Music is that existence that transcends all boundries

Music is that existence that transcends all boundries.....this is something that occurred to me the other day. I was feeling a bit worn out like a runner out of breath but still running. The amount of sacrifice all of this entails is enough to squeeze the life out of anyone. But then I worked on the final mix for "Always, Everything" and I detached myself from the music and listened to it purely as a listener and I was lost in it. The thought of music being an existence that transcends everything came to my mind. When you listen to music you are in the moment, your reality is altered as your mind interprets the information of sound waves, music is an art that is existence, it has no walls and when you listen to it your mind is free.   Achieving this freedom makes all the sacrifice of any musician or artist absolutely worth it and is why I guess I still run in pursuit of an endless goal.

"Always, Everything" is a song about accepting...well....everything....always.  We fall, we get up, we fall again whether by choice for example through self-sabotage or by circumstance, I am not sure if there is a difference between the 2 but for the sake of sanity let's say there is. A.E is a very different sounding song than anything SToB has done in the past, it's me on everything with a simple piano and vocal with lines of harp and an orchestra at the end. I completed the cover art a couple of days ago

I am now in the process of filming a video of a modern dancer that choreographed a piece to this song....the video will be as low budget as it comes, basically $0, it's just a home movie camera and no special effects or frills. It's a video about performance and interpretation. It's absolutely amazing to see a dancer create moves that interpret the music, I am blown away by it.

I did a test video last night but I am hoping to do the real deal this Friday night. If you want to get a raw look at the video before anyone else send me a message on Google Wave (Actually GW is pretty cool it's like email and IM all in one and on steroids) will be using it from now on to show the best fans/supporters all the new stuff before it premieres here is my address shaolintempleofboom.dalvarez@googlewave.com

Looking though the archives I came across this cover of the first CD for Shaolin Temple of BooM made about 5 years ago, it features an early myspace phenom called Jeri Lee, damn this brings back memories of how SToB began, I took this shot of her in a studio back when Shaolin only had 2 songs "Crippled so hard" and "Inside".

I had no equipment just a camera and light bulb but she was cool enough to model for it free...

Since we are taking a walk down memory lane I am sure some of you out there remember this guitar

That thing has been in the pawn shops of Los Angeles I think more than any other guitar in history haha, I used to pawn it all the time when short on money for recording expenses and so forth. It's now safe in my apt, never to return to a pawn shop, even though I am still struggling I am at least floating and not drowning like I used to...but just barely floating.

I am very excited to announce we have a show coming up on December 10th in Glendale, California...it's a cool little spot called Labrie's and I am very much looking forward to this show, it will be the first show we do with Lior and will be the last show of 2009 paving the way for 2010 which will see SToB tour heavily and as much as possible. Come join us on December 10th as we take 2009 out with a Bang and welcome 2010 with a BooM Labrie's 806 E. Colorado St. Glendale, CA 91205 FREE ADMISSION Come have a couple of beers with us and party up! We are on at 10 pm That's it for now...till the next time which will be once the video for "Always, Everything" is done
